| I have eleven days left at home. I want to make them count. Since I've already gone through my stuff and packed the boxes to send away, it won't take as long to do the "real" packing. This semester my classes will be: Greco-Roman History, Latin, Political Science, Church History, Life of Christ, Genesis: Foundations, and World History Since 1900. I'm so excited! | | |
| Only four semesters left of school, so I really need to start thinking and get some direction regarding the specifics of a job. I don't want a career -I want to be a wife and stay-at-home mom (yep, I know that it's not generally popular today, but I think that it's what God has called me to do). I do need to be prepared, however, and learned, so that I can support myself to a degree in the near future, not knowing what it will hold. I've got my feelers out, and I'm looking into possible directions. Here are a few that sparked my attention.
1) Legislative Analyst Attention to detail and keen insight into the effects of legislation make history majors valuable advisors to lawmakers, lobbyists, and nonprofit organizations. History majors can effectively predict the outcomes of government spending programs and other legislative initiatives, while recommending alternate solutions to current problems. History majors employed as analysts can also use their interviewing skills to lead teams of market researchers. Through personal interviews, polls, and focus groups, analysts can discover the most effective ways to tell stories about new programs to concerned voters. 2) Magazine Editor History majors that edit magazines rely on their strong memories and powerful fact-checking skills to prepare compelling reading for their subscribers. In the fast-paced world of publishing, many editors have to make coverage decisions based on raw instinct. A history major can immediately understand whether a story or an angle holds relevance for their readers in the context of current events. They can also help writers and contributors adjust their projects based on past coverage of a topic or an interview subject. By viewing their role through a historical perspective, magazine editors can create publications that accurately chronicle our current lives. 3) Novelist Though novels are works of fiction, audiences crave authenticity in their entertainment. Many history majors who share a love of writing can put their knowledge of historical periods to use by crafting clear visions of days gone by. Because history majors spend so much time learning to decipher the causes and effects of major world events, they can craft elaborate scenarios that keep readers engaged from cover to cover. By couching their tales in accurate settings, historians can open up their favorite worlds to new audiences. Many readers pick up a historian's love of an era or of a character, while enjoying an entertaining story. 4) Politician
History majors that enter the political arena often enjoy significant advantages against competitors who lack the insight into world events and the ability to communicate ideas effectively. Many politicians with history degrees can develop innovative new policies and strategies by emulating some of the world's most admired leaders. They can identify potential trouble more easily by matching up other legislators' ideas with historical precedent. Most importantly, they can approach their positions with the long view of history on their side. By envisioning positive results, they can effectively break down their goals into actionable steps that appeal to voters. 5) Teaching: Though I won't have my Doctorate, with the knowledge I have, and good curriculum (I like A Beka and A.C.E. for History texts), I could teach a small class of local homeschoolers (fellow Sierra View CS'ers??) or anyone who wanted the extra info. Just a thought. I haven't explored the ins and outs yet. Hopefully it would be feasible.
We'll see where God leads. | | |
| Goodmorning! God is so good. God is so good. Gos is SO GOOD. He's so good to me (and you). | | |
| Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee; O let me not wantder from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Ps. 119:9-11 | | |
| Every day is a good day, because it is a gift of God. Today we tried a new park on Doak. Lots of stuff that makes you spin! I don't remember what they're called, but it had one of those things that looks like a big, flat disk that spins, and it has handlebars on it so that children don't go flying. We enjoyed that. I swung on a swing! I don't think I've swung since....5 years ago at Life Action summer camp. I'd forgotten how fun it is. I have a jury summons for July 14. Great-grandma is in the hospital. She's anemic, and may need a blood transfusion. She's almost 93, and just as spunky as, well, probably since the day she was born! But...she's still 93, and she forgets her age sometimes. We went to see her last night. She's SO funny. Loves drama. :) She was in a room with 3 other ladies, so I'm sure she'll get plenty of interesting dialog! She said she's coming down to visit as soon as she's up and around again (I have no doubt she will!). I love her. Latin. I have no idea, really, what to expect this next year. I'm looking forward to learning some of a couple of new languages over the next two years, but I am so nervous, too. The nagging bug of Fear/Discouragement/You-Aren't-Capable is visiting again, and I'm just about to kick him out! I'm reminding myself that God calls us unequipped to the task, then equips us as we go. He does not abandon. Better to learn His way and let Him be glorified through my inability. For some reason, fear is one of the strongest, deepest roots for me to dig out. "Thorn in the flesh." But fear is not trusting God. God is Trustworthy. So I should trust. It's going to be hot tomorrow, so the kids and I are going to our Most Gracious Auntie's house to SWIM! They can hardly contain their little selves! : D | | |
